Como Carousel

Como Park has a lovely restored carousel which occasionally gets rented out by wedding parties for fun photo ops. That white blur in the center of the photo is actually the bride du jour. Took me several tries to catch her at just the right moment but I finally got her. Fun photo don't you think?

Como Amusement Park

Next to the small zoo is a small amusement park and this time of year, it's absolutely swamped with kids! It's free to get in like the zoo, but they ask for donations at the gate.

USS Swordfish

Did you know that Como Park houses a WWII memorial? I didn't until today. One of her unspent "fish" is on display with a plaque of those who were lost on her when she sank. Below is a brief history of her. Enjoy.

USS SWORDFISH I (SS-193), under the command of Cdr. K.E. Montross, left Pearl Harbor on 22 December 1944, to carry on her thirteenth patrol in the vicinity of Nansei Shoto. She topped off with fuel at Midway on 26 December and left that day for her area. In addition to her regular patrol, SWORDFISH was to conduct photographice reconnaissance of Okinawa, for preparation of the Okinawa Campaign.
On 2 January, SWORDFISH was ordered to delay carrying out her assigned tasks in order to keep her clear of the Nansei Shoto area until completion of carried based air strikes which were scheduled. She was directed to patrol the general vicinity of 30!N;132!E until further orders were received. In the last communications received from SWORDFISH, she acknowledged receipt of these orders on 3 January.
On 9 January 1945, SWORDFISH was directed to proceed to the vicinity of Okinawa to carry out her special mission. It was estimated that the task would not take more than seven days after arrival on station, which she should have reached on 11 January. Upon completion of her mission, SWORDFISH was to proceed to Saipan, or to Midway if she was unable to transmit by radio. Since neither place had seen her by 15 February, and repeated attempts to raise her by radio had failed, she was reported as presumed lost, the victim of unknown causes.

Albino Squirrel

Right here in St. Paul, a rare albino squirrel. Well, I don't know how rare it really is, I just know I've never seen one. Forgive the unclear photo. I had to edit the picture quite a bit since my zoom lens is not the greatest.

Also, please forgive the long absence. I'm toying with the idea of deep sixing the photo blog since I can't seem to keep up with it and I get very few comments. But I'm going to try for a little bit longer to do better. Thanks.

Springtime in St. Paul

Springtime brings backyard bliss.

One of St. Paul's famous landmarks. The Dari-ette! A drive up icon from the past which is still thriving in our little town. Oddly, they specialize in Italian food but this jumpin' little joint is so great that it was covered on the Food Network. Anyone out there ever been there?

Last One

A final shot from the O'Garas fundraiser. This pretty Indian sat at the end of a long row of bikes but managed to stand out all on her own!

O'Garas held a fundraiser today to help support a MN boy who was severly injured in Iraq. The Patriot Guard Riders were there and this nice Rider let me photograph his vest.

Out with the old, in with the new!

In this day and age, a regular Target just won't do. The one near my house, which the locals affectionately refer to as Targhetto, is soon to be leveled so it can become the parking lot for the new and improved Super Targhetto! In this photo, Target is on the right and Super Target is on the left. In 3 months, Target will be gone and Super Target will be open. Is it just me or does this seem an excessive waste????

Whole Foods

Once I got over being intimidated by this grocery store, I found that they carried some amazing seafood, sausages, cheeses and they have one hell of a salad bar, which is hard to find around these parts. I'm not an organic kind of girl. Why pay twice as much for apples with worm holes? I'll take the chemicals thankyouverymuch. They haven't killed me yet so I think I'll keep on rollin' the dice! But there are some wonderful things you can only find at Whole Foods. Plus, I love the wonderful mural on the side of the building.

Ancient alleys

The Cathedral Hill area hosts some of St. Paul's oldest and most spectacular homes. Behind the scenes of those majestic mansions are some enchanting carriage houses and cobblestone alley ways. Years of use and weather have left their unique imprint on these alley ways and I think they are almost as fabulous as the homes themselves.

One of my favorite homes on Summit, this huge white house reminds me of a plantation home and there is a lovely little park and fountain right next door.

Porch Bandits Strike Again!

I had to stop and photograph this house because it looks like someone snuck in overnight and swiped their porch. A home like this should have a porch. A big one, one that wraps around 3 sides and beckons to friends and neighbors. Don't you think?

Irish Kitty

Assuming I haven't lost ALL my Picture St. Paul readers, I must apologize! I have had less and less time to go out and capture St. Paul in all her glory as I work very hard capturing children's smiles in the same building in Roseville day after day. I thank everyone who stops by and checks in on me and hope that soon I'll have some more lovely sights for you to enjoy. Hang in there folks. I'm not throwing in the towel just yet.
